Let me recommend to all 164 of you a new book on fly casting by Lefty
Kreh:-
CASTING with LEFTY KREH, Copyright 2008 by
Lefty Kreh, Pub.: Stackpole Books, ISBN - 13:
978-0-8117-0369-7.
I have already spent several hours going over this book with a
"fine toothed comb".
Lefty covers most of the topics important to all of us as
instructors. His text is impeccable as well as clearly
understandable.
The photographs of casting scenarios are the best I've ever
seen in print !
As usual, he has come up with some fine teaching tips and
advice to teachers including, "Never use a big word when a small one will
do." (Frankly, this comment addresses one of my biggest teaching
faults.)
One feature which I find stimulating is his description of
casts and concepts using different language from that with which we have become
so accustomed.... if not inbred. I find that refreshing, especially as I
strive to find common ground between concepts as I understand them and as he
does.
As I did this, I found that even with the differences in word
descriptions, in the end we are really all talking about the same
things... No "right" or "wrong".
When you read the section on tailing loops in Chapter 14, you
will see some differences in the way Lefty describes the problem ...... also
many similarities.
On page 7 you will see a passage describing a student who once
told him, "Lefty, that is not what you said last year." I saw this as the
springboard to what is obvious. Namely that as with all of us who study
the sport of fly casting, Lefty's opinions and descriptions represent the
journey of continued education which progresses as
new developments and new information emerge.
With that in mind, look for changes in his descriptions of the
double haul from his past writings. Try, as you read, to look for other
such changes.
This book should be added to our list of recommended
reading for MCCI candidates. Each, I feel, should add a copy to his/her
private study library !!!
