    > ++++ ++++++ On grass for this task I offer the following option to the candidate if he/she feels the need for some help to anchor the line/leader.  I have the candidate make a straight-line overhead cast placing the yarn fly at the fifty foot mark (measured from the caster).  This gets the right length of line and leader out.  The candidate then draws the rod back into the roll cast stop position slowly forming a 'D' loop....rod should be fully stopped at this point.  The fly will have been pulled back toward the candidate during this process.  I then stand on the fly to anchor it.  The candidate executes the roll cast......I remove my foot from the fly as the loop rolls past me.  If good roll casting technique was used, and I remove my foot from the fly at the right time, the line and leader straightens at the fifty foot distance.

Currently, some examiners simply anchor the fly witht the clipboard as you have done.  Since the exam is on grass the examiner forgoes critique of the leader straightening completely forgiving that portion of the task and just watching loop formation to ensure roll casting technique was adequate.

In the revised masters performance test, not yet approved, we have inserted a statement on roll casting that states "Allowances will be made if casting on grass -- candidates may opt to cast with or without anchoring the leader or use a grass leader".
