Note my attachment on commonly used terms and abbreviations from fly casting lexicon.  As you read it, please understand that some of the, "definitions" will be re-worded by our FFF Glossary committee in the future.

    From Craig Buckbee :

    hi gordy,

some thoughts on teaching the rollcast...

understanding that the rollcast is a teaching tool,

not just a fishing cast, how about a backward rollcast?

perhaps not a fishing cast, but certainly a method to

    learn about the rearward loop.

let me explain... after a recent spey clinic (with al buhr + jim valle)

and with it the ever expanding world of new rod tip movements, i arrived home

to start playing with my new 'toys'. they led me to start throwing a rearward

    rollcast.

the set-up is the mirror image of the standard forward roll. it works, and it

allows the caster to separate out the rear loop from the usual forward/

    backward casting motion(s).

    crazy?

    Craig ...

Not at all crazy, whether teaching Spey or Straight line overhead casting.

I have used the technique of teaching the back cast  (or even polishing the back casts of MCCI canditates) by having the caster make repeated back casts starting with the fly line stretched out on the grass before him/her.   The caster makes the back cast and critiques the loop as it unfurls.  He, then, turns and makes another back cast in the opposite direction.  No forward cast is made.  This allows the caster and instructor to concentrate on the back cast apart from all else.

George Roberts starts his students doing just this as he teaches salt water fly casting.  (Check this out on his video, SALTWATER FLY CASTING, 10 Steps to Distance and Power, 1998 White Mouse Productions.)

Your description, above, is an advance on this technique.  It is more difficult to make a nice tight loop when roll casting in either direction, but particularly when making that backward roll cast.  By doing it repeatedly, it helps build an advanced element of control.

One way to do it, is to have the caster simply make the, "setup" for the backward roll maneuver, by flipping a well controlled , underpowered loop of line before him on the grass or water, stopping, then making the reverse roll cast.

    Overview;

This workshop will focus on casting, analysis of casting problems, and teaching.  The material presented below also includes information that should help you grow as a casting instructor and improve your fly-casting

    ·         A simple definition of casting.

    ·         The mechanics and fundamentals (substance) of casting including essential principles or physics of casting and variables in the casting stroke. Bill Gammel’s 5 essentials will be the basic study syllabus.

    ·         Elements of style (grip, stance, and body movements that define ‘form’ in fly casting).

    ·         Observations on teaching fly-casting.

    ·         A six-step method to analyze, communicate and cure casting problems.

    ·         Common casting problems and cures.

    ·         Casting; basic pickup-laydown, roll casting, shooting line, hauling, mends and slack line casting. Accuracy, Loop control.

    In the Classroom;

Steve; A teachers Notebook. How people learn

Al; FFF Ethics, History of the FFF Casting Program

Bryan; equipment, lines, leaders and tippets

    Casting Demonstrations.

Gary: the Casts that the CCI Test requires.

Ken: Hooks and mends. Slack line casting

Al; Roll casting on the grass.

Dinner at noon; Brisket on Saturday/ Chicken on Sunday

Casting till dark thirty on Saturday till 5:30 on Sunday

In summary, in order to throw tight loops in a straight line, you must make the rod tip travel in a straight line during the casting stroke. To do this, you will always need to eliminate right to left deviations in the rod tip path, eliminate slack, and accelerate the rod tip smoothly ending in a stop. Every other addition or subtraction to the cast will affect the amount of bend in the rod and the time it takes for the loops to straighten. You should be constantly watching your loops, and making the correct adjustments. By following the one foot at a time drill, you will develop a feel for every rod position that you will need. The more you practice these situational changes; the quicker you will be able to execute them on the fly. Bill Gammel
