From Steve Hollensed:
Hi Gordy,
Great, thought provoking questions!!!
I would say d - just prior to RSP at the stop.
In reply to Tom's question about distance casting books, I believe that
George Robert's "Saltwater Flycasting" video is an excellent reference
for distance casting.

Steve.....
Bruce Richards felt that for most casts at moderate distances, the release of the haul was done at RSP.
Jeff Wagner had studied this and came to the conclusion that for distance casts, the release was just after RSP during counterflex.
Turns out that this is as close as I can come to definitive answers, because no fully scientific measurements have yet been done.
My take is that releasing at RSP is probably efficient, as Bruce says ..... but that for tournament distance casting, we may find that releasing a fraction of a second later, during counterflex, may be the way to go.
I agree on George Roberts' video on Saltwater Fly Casting .... also his book by the same name. The video is available in DVD format .... SALTWATER FLYCASTING, 10 STEPS TO DISTANCE AND POWER, 1998 White Mouse Productions, www.whitemouseflyfishing.com
