    Walter & Group........

    From Ally Gowans....

    Hi Gordy,

The terms over powered and under powered suggest that there is something wrong with the cast. I wish we could come up with terms that are better descriptive. Lots of head scratching required!

    Best wishes,

    Ally Gowans

Ally ...   You are right about that .... one more reason that these terms are not ideal.

Mac Brown, CASTING ANGLES, p. 45 used the terms:  "Normal force cast" (for most, "normal" casts),  "Positive force cast" (for what some have called, "overpowered casts", and "Negaitive force casts" for casts made with less than usual force or what some call, "decelerating casts" or "underpowered casts".

Another way to look at it.

From Bob Rumpf :  (Who has probably gone deeper into the flycasting literature of the past than anyone of us..)

    Hi Gordy & Group,

I also use the terms Over-powered and Under-powered when teaching those type curves. I usually qualify my terms with my students by explaining further that we call this an "Over-powered Curve" simply because it is performed using an Over-powered stroke. The same would apply to the "Under-powered Curve" which I rarely teach due to the difficulty factor coupled with the resulting uncertain layout. With me, the definitive word in what I have stated is "simply", I am a great believer in keeping it simple. This certainly does not indicate that I think my students could not handle the more technical terms. Being relatively close to New York City many of my students are professional people with enviable educational backgrounds. I have had several brain surgeons and at least one honest to goodness rocket scientist. However, I honestly feel that when taking a casting or fly fishing lesson, they are trying to enjoy a day away from the mental pressure they deal with on a daily basis on the job, so I give them accurate, simple terminology in an effort to make their day more enjoyable. If they were attempting to explain their work to me, I know I would certainly appreciate if they would do the same as I am quite sure they could quickly confuse me with the technical jargon which accompanies their particular field of study.

Bob... Good points.  I think the ideal would be to come up with terms which are reasonably accurate from a scientific point of view and, yet, simple enough for any student to grasp....              Gordy

    From Lou Bruno:

    Gordy -

I notice that the author’s of the fly casting books use different terminology. I have to admit, for me, at times it can be a bit confusing.

Being part of this study group helps to sort out the confusion. I think the teachers, instructors when we communicate should have a better and more precise understanding and meaning of our terms. Then we can communicate this to our students.

Not too much to add; but I think the Master’s and the FFF dictionary are making moves to sort out the clutter.

Lou...    Our Glossary committee has that objective foremost in mind.   More of a task than you might imagine !

Meanwhile until that objective is met, what we are trying to accomplish here in our Group is an understanding of the alternative terms which exist in our literature and jargon.
