    Walter & Group..........

To Bruce Richards re. criticism of electronic methods of measuring acceleration curves:-

    Bruce......

As you know, I'm certain, those who criticize your conclusions derived by
using the Casting Analyzer sometimes cite the fact that the findings
including the acceleration curves have not been confirmed by ultra high
speed video techniques.  Some are suspicious of the electronic readouts and
interpretations, especially when it comes to the concept of unchanging /
CONSTANT acceleration needed for nearly SLP of the rod tip and tight loops.

We all have recognized the variable mixtures of translation with rotation
especially at the start and sometimes at the conclusion of the stroke ..
yet, while recognizable on the computer readouts, it isn't measured by the
analyzer at the rod butt.  Frankly, I doubt this would make a significant
difference, but there are those who think it may.

We note that in medical science as well as shipping, coming to the same
conclusion using different navigation methods serves to prove a point.

This is why, in the Coast Guard navigation courses we emphasize that a ship
captain always use a minimum of three different methods of navigation for
the safety of his ship.  This is in contrast to the actions of many,
"boaters" in Florida who discard their compasses in favor of their GPS
equipment and fail to even take the time to learn basic dead reckoning.

    Answer from Bruce Richards:-

    Gordy,

Yes, there have been criticisms of the Casting Analyzer and our results,
but no one has been able to find even the slightest defect in our hardware,
    software, or conclusions.

We knew that everything we did would be scrutinized, and by some talented math
and physics people, so made very sure that our product was rock solid. It
took a couple years, but we have no doubts about what our Analzer does or
    the results generated.

There are issues with high speed video analysis that limit the accuracy of
results. However, the best work, done in Sweden by Grunde Lovell (and Jason
    Borger), largely supports our results.

Translation can be an important part of some casts, long ones anyway, but it
is still much less important than the rotational part of the cast. We
acknowledge that translation is a significant part of casts, but find that
if we can fix rotational issues a caster might have, the translation takes
    care of itself naturally.

Most casters have personal perspectives on
casting and the importance of the various parts of a cast. I do too, but
they are much different than they were just a few years ago, because I've
been able to scientifically measure and study actual casts. I was our own
worst skeptic for a while, since the analyzer didn't confirm all of what I
"knew" to be right. Eventually Noel convinced me that what we were seeing
was real, and that maybe I'd have to adjust my thinking to embrace the new
truth... Now it all makes  prefect sense....  My biggest problem is due to
the fact that we sell the CA. That reduces our credibility as casting
scientists in the eyes of some, our product has to be great, we want to
sell them! But with time that will pass. More and more people with science
backgrounds have them now and are confirming our work, eventually it will
be accepted by, well, most.... Bruce
