From Jerry Puckett:-
Gordy:
It was DR. Syd Smith to whom I referred on the casting analyzer. I
might also note that I over looked having cast several of the bamboo rods he
made. As I recall my thinking then, I felt that these rods would fish
exceptionally well and therefore would perform well on CCI and Masters
test! Syd has the craftsmen as well as the artist touch! I might
also note that Syd deals with arthritis and has made adaptations to his casting,
he is still the best in teaching and casting. He is a shining example
of what passion and desire can do, Hats off to Syd!
What a great resource we have in this special e-mail group. Ask a
question and the best of the casting and teaching world responds. Thanks
gentlemen and a great year to you!

From Jason Borger....
Gordy--For what its worth, one of the nicest feeling distance rods I ever
cast (designed for a 5wt) was cane, a Hans Gebetsroither taper, in particular.
It would not have been an issue to take the CCI with it, that's for sure.

Jason...
Glad to hear that. Some of the folks in our Study Group may not know
that Hans Gebetslroither was head keeper on the Traun River in Austria many
years ago. He is generally given credit for popularizing what is referred
to as, "the European Continuous Tension Casts" which preceeded the, "Belgian
cast", credit for which has been given to Albert Godart in the late
1930's. We now refer to these casts as belonging to the general catagory
of, "elliptical casts" one principle feature of which, in addition to
continuous tension, I see as a significant change of rod planes between the back
cast and the forward cast.
Charles Ritz refers to Hans in his book, A FLY FISHERS LIFE. Both he
and Hans were bamboo fly rod designers . (I believe Charles designed
some rods for Pezon et Michel of France as their technical adviser.
Several years ago, I was given one of those rods.)

Howdy Gordy and
gang
Got this from Rod maker
Harry Boyd Winnsboro LA I have one of his 4 wts that I dearly love
to fish.
His canes are what I would class
as Med Fast Great casting tools better fish fighting tools.
I passed the CCI test with one of my rods. Gene Holland
also passed
with a bamboo rod -- a Winston 8' 6" #7 rod. I think Peter
Jones in
Michigan also passed with bamboo, but I'm not
sure.
John Long in Michigan passed with bamboo, but
that was in the days
when testing wasn't so rigorous.
