Walter & Group...........
Rick Whorwood is writing an article for the LOOP on the BELGIAN CAST. We had conversation on the various uses for this cast:-
1.) I pointed out one instance in which I use it for permit fishing on the flats.
The permit is a fish which will eject your fly in a split second after taking it. Most fly anglers never even know if they actually got a, "take" because with any slack in the line and/or leader, by the time they try to come tight, the critter is gone and they've felt nothing.
Often, a very accurate cast with a heavy/bulky fly is needed under windy conditions at varying distances. The layout must be straight with no slack at all. It's a tall order which I find often easiest to achieve with the Belgian cast. (Personal preference.)
2.) Of course, the Belgian wind cast can be used for handling a strong wind on the casting hand side. A change of rod planes may be used with an off horizontal back cast low over the casting arm side and the forward delivery made with a vertical rod plane directly overhead or over the opposite shoulder.
3.) I sometimes use this cast when I need a tight loop for distance and/or casting into the wind while fishing a heavily weighted fly. There is no tight loop on the back cast because of the continuous tension technique. On the final delivery cast I can use a tight loop for that one presentation cast without a problem.
QUESTION : CAN YOU COME UP WITH OTHER PRACTICAL USES FOR THIS ELLIPTICAL (BELGIAN) CAST ?
