ol Al...
I've been asked how in the dickens I can make these calculations out on a skiff in the wind.
I used to jot down or simply try to remember the measurements of length and girth....then do the math at home.
Now I carry a pocket solar calculator and use that. Only takes a minute or so....and the darned thing even takes a salt water drenching with no problem.

Subject: what size is the fish

Here from Gordy is a IGFA Formula;Tack this in your note bookIn wondering how many of our Group know that so-called, "IGFA formula" for calculating the approximate weight of a fish from the length and girth measurements, I thought I'd describe it in these terms:
Multiply the length of the fish in inches by square of the girth in inches at the thickest point, then divide the product by 800.
That version usually comes out pretty close even with, "football bows". Let's take an imaginary, "whatsit" fish:-
Example: Length = 40 Girth= 20"
Square of Girth = 20x20 = 400
40 x 400 = 16,000
16,000 divided by 800 = 20. You have just, "taped out" a twenty pound fish.
We can't weigh large salt water fish such as tarpon, tuna, sharks, etc. without killing them. I won't do that under any circumstances.......so most of us, here, either estimate the weight or, in some circumstances, as when a guest REALLY wants to know the wt. of the fish, I'll use this method. Years ago, when we were killing fish (who knew !) we made real comparisons with actual weights.....and came out very close.
Because of the danger of doing that with live sharks, our fishing club accepts only length measurements of these creatures.
