ol Al...
We must be careful labelling slack line, "casts". Most are mends or, "cast-mends". One example is the so-called PILE CAST which also goes by the names, PUDDLE CAST and, sometimes, "DUMP CAST". 'With this one, the caster makes a low back cast .... then a high forward cast followed by a downward reach mend as he/she drops the rod or the rod tip. (Mack Brown calls this, "rod fade".)
During one MCI exam a short while back, I'm told, Gary Borger asked the candidate to show him a slack line CAST. (No mend). The candidate couldn't do it. Gary then demonstrated a forward cast with the rod tip striking the water at its conclusion. The line/leader piled up in slack !
One can even execute a, "haul mend". If it's done as a check haul prior to loop formatin at RSP it might be considered a true slack line cast as the line and leader bounce back in a pile of slack. In the event that the pull back haul is done after loop formation, then I submit it wold be a mend.
Another way of doing it, is to make an overpowered forward cast with the line clamped down to the cork grip. No haul needed. As the line comes tight it will bounce back and form a pile of slack.
Tricky stuff !
Gordy
The so-called, "reach cast" is usually a reach-mend. There is, however, a true reach cast in which the caster casts in the horizontal rod plane while reaching way out to one side.

Phil and Gordy you are both right:
The CCI does not really have mends, other than the:
The "Slack Line Cast" or is this a mend?
The "Reach Cast" which is a 'Reach cast/mend'. In that it can be done with having more line
out than would reach the target or you have to shoot the line.
The rod must end up pointing right or left 90 degrees, from facing the river or stream. Tip at the water.
The "casts" that are required are the: Forward Cast, Back Cast, Roll Cast, Both from the off shoulder also.
Tailing Loop Cast. Dump cast. 'Slack line' cast or is this a mend.
You can change the Speed, Trajectory, and Lenght of the listed cast, what you do after the stop is a Mend.

Phillip & ol Al ....
Yes....that's on target.
All the requirments are on the written list of tasks and in the MCI Study Guide. Remember that a mend is manipulation of the fly line after the cast. Mends may be on the water mends, or in the air mends.
MCI candidates should be able to make aerial mends to the right and left and should be able to teach how to:
1.) Make them narrow (side to side) short excursion lateral rod tip movements.
2.) Make them wide (side to side) long excursion lateral rod tip movements
3.) Make them long (end to end) increased time for lateral rod movement
4.) Make them short (end to end) shorter time for lateral rod movement
5.) Make them at different distances around targets, all the way from a target at 15' to a target at 45' for short targets, make the mend later and lower. For distance targets, make the mend earlier and higher. For great distance mends (45' to 60') may elect to carry more line, make the mend very early (right after loop formation), use higher loop speed, and shoot the mend once formed.
Other mends not on the exam but which should eventually be learned:-
Vertical hump mends (used for feeding slack line downstream or for a hump mend pickup when the line is on the water with high grass, etc.)
Right angle mends
Double mends
"S" mends
Compound mends.
Upward and downward vertical reach mends.
MCI candidates should be able to come up with about 12 uses for various mends while fishing.
Candidates should read,"....THE NATURE OF FLY CASTING", Jason Borger. P.2 , PP.83 - 98 and PP 195 - 199.
Also: "THE CAST", Ed Jaworowski (Great photos by Lefty Kreh !) pp.160 - 166
And: "Joan Wullff's FLY CASTING TECHNIQUES" pp. 169-172.
Also: "FLY FISHING STRATEGY", Doug Swisher and Carl Richards, pp 41-44.
" : "ON THE TROUT STREAM....", Joe Humphreys...(The "downer/upper cast-mend") pp. 21-27.
" : "CASTING ANGLES" by Mac Brown (For basic mends, wind mends, the,"heavenly mend", the, "bucket mend", etc)., pp.138 - 141.
" : "PRESENTATION" by Gary Borger, (On mending including curve mends, roll cast mends, anchor mends, the, "dancing line mend", the, "hump mend, the parachute mend, reach mends and others) : pp228 - 232.
For those interested, I'll be teaching these and other specialty moves and casts at my workshop, "Difficult Casts to Difficult Places" at the FFF Conclave at Bozeman, Mo. in July.

Well Allen, I went to the Web site to see what was said about performing "Mends" and couldn't find anything so what follows is a guess.
A Casting Instructor Candidate should be able to perform, upstream and down stream mends without disturbing the tippet and fly or what we like to call the Terminal Tackle. I would think that Reach Casts could be thought of as an in air mend before the line in on the water and should be preformed either in an upstream or down stream direction.
Let me know if I am on the right track.

Howdy Caster of the long rods
Phil sent a response that led me to believe that I was not clear on the question. So what should you to during your test if not clear? Ask for more information. BUT being a member of this study group you should know just what is required or I messed up....
On the Question of the week :
Get on your list and tell me what are mends required for the CCI test and what are the Cast required of the Candidate?
You are right on the Masters
:
"...Now what would the Masters be looking for in each cast?.."
On the CCI test there is not a hook cast required that is on the masters.
Now see if you can tell what the MENDS & CAST are to look like. That is: Try to describe the cast or how to perform the task.
The idea is that although the cast is listed it is left up to your casting style to use the mechanics to get it done. Watch the Reach cast. That one can get you....This will give you a study in saying and writing the words for the actions.
