This from Liam Duffy of Ireland:
Hi Guys,
now you are into my area, the term is "DAPPING" no "L" so now
lets have a discussion on a method of fly fishing practiced in Ireland from
a time "before America was invented" as we in Ireland would say. I don'd
mean to insult anyone, but dapping has been practised in Ireland long before
there was any books written on it. The rod was NEVER thrown in after the
fish but the drift of the boat was used and when that was not sufficient the
oars were used to follow the fish. So, c'mon lets get goin' and there is an
open invitation to any member of the group to go DAPPING if they ever visit
Ireland

Liam....
Reminds me of the time we did a form of this in Northern California a few years ago with Mel Toponce and Andy Puyance.
We used an 18' rod with a leader affixed to the tip. About 100 lb test wire ! To this was affixed a # 8/0 hook with a squid bait.
We took our lives in hand as we jumped from rock to rock in the Pacific surf. The idea was to DAP the bait on the foam from the breakers between the rocks to entice kelp greenling, cabazonies, and monkey-faced-eels.
Had to keep one eye on the foam beneath us and another on the next incoming breaker.
NOT fly fishing......but exciting !
