Hi Rick,
seeing you talk about having the student sit in a lawn chair
brought back memories for me. Some years ago I was asked to assist the
Irish team with their fly casting, so I did my normal talk and demo about
the various casts and their uses. I then enquired as to " who needed help
with any cast?" and the answer I got was "can you perform those casts
sitting on the ground as we are all on the boating team" (lough style drift
fishing as performed in Ireland is a two man team in a "traditional" style
drift boat which is turned broadside to the breeze and allowed to drift down
a particular direction, or "drift" as termed here, so for all you folks in
the masterstudy group, try this (I had to) sit ON THE GRASS and demonstrate
the various casts, THEN you will know if your back cast is dropping. Try it
for the fun of it, and if you don't get it first time, just fall back and
laugh, or enjoy the sunshine remember you can't fall off the ground,
Have fun,
after all it's just a sport,
Regards & Tight Lines

Good point !! All should try this.
Tom White sometimes does a demo for those who say to him that the reason he can cast so well and so far is that he is very tall.
He sits down on the grass and makes some beautiful distance casts without a flaw.
Then they say to him, "Well you can do that because you have such long arms".
He, then, tucks his casting arm beneath his shirt so that only the hand/wrist/and forearm stick out of his collar and still makes a beautiful distance cast while still sitting.
He sometimes finalizes the whole demonstration by doing this while lying supine on the grass !!!!!!!
You have to see this to believe it.
