    Excellent Capt. Rahe and Gordy:

Other Sports offer help in teaching such as tennis and baseball.  When I get with a person and we get into one grip fix state of mind.  I pull out my tennis racket and golf club and go over grips.  In tennis the western grip verse the eastern grip, for example, and discuss the advantage of each and prominent players using either grip.  I try to emphasis the end result of each grip, along with other fundamentals, that is a ball well placed with power, control and finesse on short shots.   I also mentioned I used both grips in my tennis having contributed to extra points due to the surprise factor.

Having thrown the javelin during my track days similarities to the long distance cast can be used as teaching aids, namely tremendous body rotation and stroke length, maintaining SLP of the javelin tip and aiming--aim being fairly important with people in the area.

We can use the baseball swing and hip rotation in our discussion on distance casting to our teaching advantage, maybe even darts in short casting.  I also mention the various grips a pitcher uses to get a desired result--slider, sinking ball, curve, fast ball and the knuckle ball pitch, for example, and encourage a student to be open and not a knuckle head.  Yes, I have thought of using knuckle head but never said it--yet!  I enjoy using the endless teaching possibilities from other sports.

It is all a part of the bag of tricks.  By the way that Capt Rahe knows what he is talking about, I have fish with him one fine Florida day.  He is a joy to be with and a superb teacher.  I learned more in one day about salt watering casting than all the books I have read. Thanks Capt Rahe!

Thanks to all you smooth swingers who serve as my teachers.  Jerry

    From Capt. Greg Rahe :-

    Gordy,

Like Dusty, I also like using the golfing examples when discussing style with my clients. The styles of Tiger, Jack, Arnold Palmer, and Lee Trivino are worlds apart from their grip to their swing plane to their tempo. Some of them can’t perform shots that the others can and vice-versa. I’m reminded of Tom’s and your advice: we don’t change a student’s style unless they can’t perform a required task. Good casters, like good golfers, will change their natural style at times to get the job at hand done.

The real AHHA comes when you take 20 pictures of each of the above golfer’s swings from start to finish and compare them. They look worlds apart until the moment of truth – impact! Strong moves, with no wasted energy and squared shoulders and club faces.

I’ve never seen this done with casters, but I bet we find the same thing.
