    Hi Guys!

New guy on the block here!

I'm Phil Gay!  I'm a Master certified instructor as is Ol Al.  I'm also on the Board of Governors of the Casting Certification  program.  I asked Al if I could be included in your discussions.

If I understand Al's question correctly we are dealing with sweep or a curved path of the rod tip front to back or vice  versa.  It is easily detectable by standing directly in front/behind the caster.  To the caster the error is manifested by the top part of the loop layed over to the side of the bottom part.  Loops out of parallel.  The loops should reflect the angle that the rod is off the vertical.  eg. If casting in the vertical the top leg of the loop will be directly above the bottom.  If casting at 45 degrees from the vertical the top leg of the loop will be 45 degrees offset from the bottom. etc.

I demo  this by casting directly at my students in the vertical and point out proper parallel loop configuration.  Then I start sweeping or casting out of plane and ask the students to note that the top loop is layed completely over to the side.  This of course kills your accuracy.

I encourage my students to always lead the rod back with the back of the thumb regardless of what angle they are carrying the rod off the vertical.(This only applies to the thumb on top grip of course.)

        Just my thoughts!

Keep up the great work and I will chime in when I think I have something to contribute.  Thanks for including me in your discussions.

    Sincerely,

    Phil Gay

    Phil...

    Good teaching points, here.

As you can see, ol Al and I both have Study Groups and we sometimes share good information.

By all means, we value your input any time you see fit to jump in.
