  • "slow" rod

    Walter & Group...

Gordy - there are a number of things to bear in mind when casting the slower rod:

    1. The slow rod will bend more with the same load, i.e. if a straight line hand path and similar application of power is used with both rods the tip of the softer rod will deviate farther from a slp.

    2. The slow rod will kick back significantly if power is not applied very smoothly at the start of the stroke.

    3. The slow rod will counterflex more.

To counteract issues 1 and 2 (i.e. to maintain the slp of the rod tip) the caster must apply power very smoothly, with less acceleration, over a longer distance (longer stroke). This means the stroke will take longer (time wise) with the slower rod. Also more arc will need to be applied earlier in the stroke. In order to compensate for the counterflex the rod hand must supply some damping action during loop formation/energy transfer.

So much for the long answer. For the short answer I will paraphrase Bill Gammel - "Slow rod, slow stroke."

    Cheers

    Walter

Yes....but it still does not answer Jim's question as to what to tell the student who wants to know what to do differently with the HAND with the slower rod.
