Ron's answers to my
questions.
So How would you or what would you change on the
Casting Mechanics?
One other Question to ask your students is what time of
year would they be fishing? What changes would this bring on Lake
Fork?
Do you think that a 6 wt would cast a bass bug?
In the hands of a smaller frame person?

action rods, due to the experience level of the caster. I did not want to
assume anything here. Fast action rods in the hands of a novice could be
frustrating. They must understand how fast these rods recover when casting
a bass bug taper fly line or any line, for that matter. I would have to
teach them how to open the loop when casting, which is what your question is
asking. Yes, using a bass
tapered line changes your casting mechanics…Lines with short front heads
turnover very quickly, that coupled with a tight loop could be
disastrous. Ladies outfit that I
would carry on my boat would be one to two sizes smaller in rod weight,
considering and 8wt. is used. Thanks, Ron

Message----- Hey
Al, In
response to your question concerning a lesson on Bass fishing…If I were to guide
them I would cover:
Not
just a guide but as an instructor that they came to for a better trip
outcome. Equipment
Rod – Medium to Medium Fast Action Rod.
Why
not fast action rods?
Line – Bass Bug Taper ( Line with a short front taper for rapid turnover of big
flies).
Nice
this was covered Does this change your casting
mechanics?
Leader – Shorter leaders from 6’ to 8’, works well with Bass Bug Taper lines in
turnover of large flies.
Tippet – I would start with 16lb test tippet or higher. Remember, we are
not fishing for Trout, but Bass. You may have to steer them away
from cover.
Good
point to cover. Casts
Wide
Curve Casts – When fishing around cover or
obstructions.
Casting with the wind: Behind you, In front of you, Your lee side, and Casting
Arm side. Playing
and Landing Fish
Strip Striking – Bass are aggressive fish with tough
mouths.
Play the fish - The fish should be fought from the butt of the
rod.
Landing the Fish – I have a different opinion about this….Some Bass fly fishing
guides say that you should lip the bass, but I prefer to use a net
instead.
As
you know I do include this part as of the lesson. I want the student
to know what to do after the fish eats the
fly... Any
allowance for the bigger outfits for the ladies? What
distances will you work on and is Accuracy and "trick" cast or line mending need
to be worked on? Ron

Gang. Here it is Monday
and Gordy is somewhere on the northeast coast looking across at the rising sun.
He will be making some cast from the beach or wading out almost too deep. He is
looking for busting bait or flashes of silver. Good luck Gordy,we
are waiting for reports. The master is to
know about many different areas of fishing and should be some what
knowledgeable. Tom White uses the X fish. Where to go and how to find out what
and area offers. Here is the
problem: You are to
have some students that are heading to North Texas to fish for the Famous
What are you going
