    Jim...

You did well on most answers.

Your, "CONFOUNDED, REDICULOUS TAPER" is a new one on me !  Maybe some folks did look at Jason's line design this way.?????

Check out my comments to Bryan's answers.

    Hi, Group....

Some minutiae questions on fly lines:-

1.) How great an advantage is gained by having a very stretchy line for distance casting ?

    a.  None--a disadvantage due to the stretch disrupting the cast.

2.)  What is a density compensated fly line ?

a.A uniform sink line where the tip of the line is more dense than the belly so the line sinks in a straight line vs a "u" shape.

3.)  Does the TT line (Triangle taper) have a convex compound forward taper, a compound concave taper, or a strictly progressive forward taper ?

    a. convex compound forward taper.

4.)  If I buy and weigh several Cortland and Scientific Anglers WF fly lines, will I find that they all have approximately the same weight range for the first 30 feet if the stated designation on the package is WF7F ?

    a. Yes

5.) Can you name 3 different fly lines which have no belly ?

    a. Level line, b. shooting head ???  c.  TT ???

6.) I am casting with 50' of an XXD, WF6F fly line out of my rod tip.  What weight fly line am I actually handling ?

    a. Approx 9 wt       calculations:  30ft=160 grns/50ft=approx 250 grns

7.)  My student shows up with a 5 wt rod.  He's placed a WF7F line on it. How much line should he have out of the rod for easy false casting ?

a.12-15 ft for med flex rod

        8.)  Future question ???

9.)  In 1962, the AFTMA came up with the present method of designating fly lines by the grain weight of the first 30 feet.  What is the PRIMARY difference between this method of measuring fly lines and the former method which was stated in letters ?

    a. AFTMA is weight based and the old system was diameter based.

10.) Can you tell me one disadvantage of a fly line which has a gel spun core of Spectra ?

    a. No stretch making it difficult to get memory coils out and line straight.

    11)  I just bought a full sink WF 10 S, TYPE  VI fly line.

         a.) What does WF 10 S mean ?     1. weight forward, 10 weight, sinking

b.) What is meant by, "TYPE VI" ?  1. Very Fast sinking

    12.) What is a ST 9 ST line ?

    a. Shooting Taper, 9 weight, Sink Tip

13.)  Are silk fly lines still available ?

    a. Believe so but expensive.   Synthetic silk lines are less expensive

14.)  Your student tells you that his backing is made of Cuttyhunk.

a.) What is this material ?

    1. Braided linen from 1920's.   2. Found reference for modern braided halibut/sturgeon backing but could not find more info.

b.) Can you tell him its advantages and disadvantages ?

    a. In 1920's it deteriorated quickly, came apart under stress, and rotted / mildewed if not dried.

15.)  Another student has loaded his reel with nylon monofilament backing.  Is there any disadvantage to this ?

    a. can be ---excessive stretch, can be pulled into coils thus creating tangles and backlashes

16.)  What is the function of the rear taper of a fly line ?

    a. To better control the belly of the line ahead of the rear taper, e.g. mending

17.)  What is a CRT fly line ?

    a. "Compound Rear Taper"/ Cortland Royal Taper/Confounded Ridiculous Taper----You got me on this one Gordy
