    Group...

    These are good basic foundation questions posed by Tom White.  Let's have as many of you as possible send in answers.

    Gordie;

    Here is a topic I would like introduced to your study group.

    The Casting Arc as it relates to changes in distance and its relationship to the stroke length.

    1.)  Define stroke.

    The distance the rod hand travels during the cast.

    Stroke should be equal for the forward and back casts.

    TOM ASKED FOR US TO DEFINE STROKE. YOU HAVE DEFINED, STROKE LENGTH.

    CONSIDER THE DEFINITION OF STROKE, AS THE PATH TAKEN BY THE HAND DURING THE CAST.

    STROKE LENGTH, PERFORCE, BECOMES THE DISTANCE TRAVELED BY THE HAND.

    STROKE LENGTH IS ONLY EQUAL FOR BOTH FORWARD AND BACK CASTS WHEN THE CASTER IS NOT COMPENSATING FOR WIND, AND ONLY WHEN THE AMOUNT OF LINE CARRIED ON THE BACK CAST IS THE SAME AS THAT CARRIED FOR THE FORWARD CAST.  (YOUR BACK STROKE MAY BE SHORT WHEN CARRYING LESS LINE, THEN IF YOU DRIFT WAY BACK AND SHOOT LINE , YOUR NEXT FORWARD STROKE WOULD BE LONGER, AS YOU ARE THEN CARRYING MORE LINE, FOR EXAMPLE.)

    2.) Define Arc.

    The angle the rod travels through during the stroke.

    WHAT PART OF THE ROD ?

    When we talk about the position on the clock face at the beginning and end of the stroke we are actually talking about the number of degrees in the rod's arc, e.g., the arc from 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock is 180 degrees.

    MIGHT LOOK AT IT THIS WAY:  THIS MEASUREMENT IS EASIEST TO MAKE WITH THE PART OF THE ROD WHICH BENDS THE LEAST.......THE BUTT SECTION.

    THEN, ROD ARC (CASTING ARC) BECOMES THE ANGULAR DISTANCE OF THE BUTT SECTION OF THE ROD FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE END OF THE CAST.

    3.) Why do we vary the length of the stroke?

    In order to apply the correct amount smooth acceleration to the rod, i.e., short cast - short stroke, long cast - long stroke.

    TRUE.

    4.) Why/when do we vary the degree of arc?

    In order to vary the amount of load on the rod.  By varying the arc we can load the rod closer or farther from the butt of the rod.

    Notes:

    Typically the stroke and arc are defined from the rsp to rsp position. Drift or layback can increase the stroke and/or the arc.

    Arc, stroke and application of power also determine the path of the rod tip and, thus, determine the loop shape and size.

    YES, INDEED !  IT'S VERY IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT THE MAIN REASON TO VARY BOTH STROKE LENGTH AND ROD ARC TO ACCOMODATE VARYING LENGTHS OF LINE CARRIED IS TO MAKE CERTAIN THAT THE BEND IN THE ROD CHANGES WITH CHANGES IN THE LENGTH OF THE LINE AND THE CAST IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN AS STRAIGHT A PATH OF THE ROD TIP AS POSSIBLE.!!!!!

    THIS IS IN ORDER TO OBTAIN A GOOD TIGHT LOOP.  LOOP CONTROL  MEANS BEING ABLE TO VARY BOTH OF THESE IN ORDER TO YIELD WHATEVER LOOP SIZE THE CASTER CHOOSES.

    THESE ARE THE "KEYS" TOM AND I WERE LOOKING FOR.

                                                    GORDY

    This is a topic that isn?t emphasized enough. It is the key to loop shaping, loop size, rod loading, the degree of acceleration that is applied during the cast, and of course distance ? or presentation.

    Thanks;

    Tom White
