    Hi Gordy and Group,

1.) What are the duties of the rod hand?

    a)       Maintain appropriate contact with the rod as the critical link between the caster (artist) and the ?casting system?.

    b)       Translate or transfer acceleration (power), deceleration (pause/stops) and overall Control of the cast.

    c)       Establish a line control point (stripping, allow slipping as required

I AGREE.  GOOD ANSWER. A MORE CRISP/BRIEF ANSWER IS:  "THE ROD HAND EXECUTES THE MECHANICS OF THE CAST."

2.) List the duties of the line hand.

    a)       Maintain line tension.

    b)       Add line speed by hauling

    c)       Retrieve line (smaller game)

    d)       Allow line slippage when desired

    e)       Strip set

    f)         Hold coils of excess line

I AGREE.  MIGHT CONSIDER ADDING: g.) HELPS CONTROL UNWANTED SLACK.

I'D DELETE, "(SMALLER GAME)" SINCE MOST OF US USE THE LINE HAND TO RETRIEVE THE FLY PRESENTED TO LARGE GAME FISH SUCH AS TARPON AND BILLFISH.  ANOTHER WAY TO PUT IT MIGHT BE, "(LINE RETRIEVAL FOR LANDING SMALLER FISH") . THAT ACTUALLY IS ANOTHER SEPERATE FUNCTION OF THE LINE HAND.

(I once asked an MCI candidate that question on his exam.  His answer included this: "...to place in pocket while demonstrating loop control without hauling while taking my exam " (!) )

Oh yea! Work the reel if it?s on that side, of course for those who get cranky on the other side I am not sure ? does the ?rod hand? change? !!!

Then of course with Spey all hands are rod hands and line hands and as far as I can figure there is no such thing as hauling!

    Little humor!

SOME CONSIDER THE USE OF THE HAND ON THE BUTT END OF THE SPEY ROD AS EXECUTING A SORT OF, "HAUL" MANEUVER.  THAT MIGHT BE STRETCHING THE CONCEPT A BIT, HOWEVER.

    Jim....

Good, concise answers. These answers should be read by all MCI candidates.  They are crisp and to the point.

In line with the Haul questions, let's tackle another series:

    QUESTIONS:-

1.) What are the duties of the rod hand?

2.) List the duties of the line hand.

    Hi Gordy & Group,

In line with our messages about hauls, are these exam questions:

1.) Name at least 3 things accomplished by the haul.

    a) Increased line speed,

    b) Shortens required stroke length as compared to carrying the same length of line without a haul, Less work per stroke for the caster

    c) Remove slack from system

Also balances the caster by using both arms, can be used to remove slack or complete a roll out of an underpowered cast, helpful to pick up line with less effort, can increase accuracy by limiting unnecessary movement, assists in making casts and/or back casts into the wind

2.) Which of them is most important to achieving distance ?

    Line speed

3.) Which is the least important to an efficient caster ?

    Removing slack

    Jim
