I know some of you have found some other really good ones...if so, let us
know.
Some off-hand comments:
Joan's video/DVD is, in my opinion a MUST. Perhaps the best one I've ever
seen for truly covering the basics. In my opinion, Joan is the first to
have actually described accurately, the "anatomy" of the fly cast. I
recommend watching it.....then go back and STUDY it.
Bill Gammel's video should be studied carefully. He teaches fly casting
based upon the essentials, and demonstrates a great way to learn to carry
increasing amounts of line. I suggested that he consider renaming the
video, "One Foot At A Time". I first watched this one through, thought about
it, then got a yellow lined pad and took notes while stop/forwarding.
No. 14.), FLYCASTING WITH LEFTY KREH is the tape which is mentioned in both
Borger's books in describing the, "thrust cast", or the "Lefty Kreh Wind
Cast". When Lefty does this, it's so fast that even when you slow it way
down, it's hard to really see exactly what he did.....so look at it AFTER
reading about it in Gary's and Jason's texts.
Mel's tapes should be studied, carefully. Really good basic information.
Tom White demo's the "dump cast"...which most of us call the "snap
cast"....with single handed casting in his video...This may well have been
the forerunner to the modern day, SNAP-T of Spey casting. It's also
described in Jason Borger's book as the, "snap pickup".
No. 13.), LESSONS WITH LEFTY is, I think, a particularly good teaching
technique film. In it, Sarah Gardner (FFF Master and guide) plays the part
of a student while Lefty instructs.
No. 5.), ADVANCED FLY CASTING.... Doug Swisher, is especially good for
teaching dry fly presentation casts for all different directions, "around
the clock" on the stream.
No. 6.) George Roberts' video on salt water fly casting emphasizes almost,
"to a fault", the development of a good back cast before even trying to
forward cast or false cast. His point is well taken, however, because it is
true that if you don't have a good back cast with this SW fishing, you are
not even in the ball game.
