    Howdy Gang
Here is the list of Rules Again Two reasons. Some new member to the study group second
     THEY ARE ON THE TEST.

remember and use this in your study.

    Re: leaders and fly lines:

1.) What is the "rule of elevens"?

    .011=0X, thus .007 =4x (.011-.007=4X) and vice versa, (.011-.004 (4x)= 007) CORRECT.

2.) What tippet would you consider for a dry fly tied on a # 12 hook ?

4X GOOD CHOICE. SOME CALL THIS THE "RULE OF 4'S".

3.) What is the "rule" governing this choice.

Divide Hook size by 3 (#12/3=4X)

4.) Is there an alternate to this "rule" ?

Yes, divide by 4 (#12/4=3X) due to:, “The Art of Fly Fishing” YES.

5.) Tell me a quick number "rule" to determine the approximate weight in grains of the first 30 feet of a 6 wt. (or other) fly line. (You can find this one on one of Lefty's books.)

Line wt # X 30 will give a quick approximation YES.

6.) What number "rule" would you use to determine the approximate pound test strength of tippet material provided you already know it's X number ?

9 –X = approx pound test ( 9-7X=2 lb) works fairly well AGREE.

7.) Your student wants to tie flies. He bought some hooks labeled, SIZE 2/0 XSS. What do you tell him this means ?

Size 2/0 short shank, stainless (Saltwater hook)

(Note: 1. Usually there is a number (# of steps long or short from the standard) in front of the X)

(Note: 2. Discrepancies between manufacturers SS at Eagle Claw means Stainless Steel) YES. CHECK OUT MY EARLIER MESSAGE ON HOOKS.

8.) This student wants to know if his 2/0 hook is larger or smaller than a 1/0 hook. What do you tell him?

Larger: Hook sizes from small to large _ small …28…20…16,14,12…8…2,1 <> 1/0, 2/0 …6/0… larger CORRECT

    9.) He's been told that a size # 1 hook is larger than a size # 2 hook. Would you agree ?

Yes, Hooks on the smaller side decrease as the number increases:

    small …28…20…16,14,12…8…2,1 <> 1/0, 2/0 …6/0… larger CORRECT

10.) What is the KEY difference in the way fly lines are rated now (since AFTMA designation of 1962) compared with the way they were rated back in the 1930's ?

Old system was based on line diameter, silk was consistent and diameter was a fair measure of weight (load potential).

When new substances (nylon, vinyl, pvc, etc) started to be used for fly lines there was too much variance in density form one substance to another and from one manufacturer to another thus a new rating system was derived based on the weight of the first 30 ft of line. YES.

Note: With the advent of faster, stronger rods in the mid to larger sizes it is typical to aerialize more than 30” of line , with a WF, 30’ head not a problem (running line is minimal) however with a longer head or double taper it is easy to over load a rod. Rod can probably handle the load but the casting stroke will have to be adjusted to accommodate what is now a slower action rod, or change to a lighter line.

There is some thought to adopt a line rating length that varies with the typical aerialized length of line, this discussion has been going on for quite some time. So we are going to have to continue explaining this to our students for a while longer. Yes, indeed. I like the proposed method described by Bruce Richards in his, MODERN FLY LINES, pp. 94 - 97.
