Walter & Gordy,The original publishing date of Mottram's book is 1914, with 2nd printing 1921. Walter, you say Marinaro used different words than Mottram. If you were taking something out of someone else's book, wouldn't you at least re-word it to avoid being so obvious? Incidentally, did you gentlemen think perhaps I was in error about Mottram having said all this before. I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so.With tongue in cheek,Bob RumpfSent: Tuesday, January 17, 2006 9:51 AMSubject: RE: Effective rod lengthWalter....
You may be right about the original publication date (???)
In his writing about the year, 2014, it's interesting to note that he envisages the social class structure and the fishing jargon to have remained unchanged !
Note his use of the word, "CAST" to mean the leader. He constantly refers to, "killing" fish. Other words and their meanings:
"Bent cast" = curve cast.
"Tarn" = a mountain pond or small lake.
"Smuts" = tiny insects
"Stickle" = a stream riffle.
"Catapult cast" = a bow-and-arrow cast.
"Over cast" = lining the fish
"Cross country cast" = casting over an expanse of meadow grass to present in water at a distance.
"Crook cast" = a curve cast such that the fly lands very close to the bank upon which the angler stands.
"Anchor" = Method of fighting a fish by leading him to a muddy cut bank so that its "nose" gets jammed in the mud.
"Sitter" = and contrivence or "set-up" for easier fishing.
"Jigging" = The jerking felt at the rod tip as the trout shakes its head.
"Gaspipe fish" = Skinny, poorly nourished or spent fish.
"Barrel" = Reel arbor.
"Ready made cast" = Manufactured leader.

Gordy - just got my copy of Mottram's book. Sure enough - he has several pages dedicatedto the concept of effective rod length and actually uses the term effective rod length and hasseveral diagrams showing how the effective length changes under various loads.Mottram uses the term differently than Marinaro. Mottram talks about how the bend in the rodchanges the effective rod length but he is concerned with how this affects playing the fish -not how it affects the cast.The copy of the book I have does not have a publication date but has been signed and datedby a G E Mackie (the original owner?). The date is June 28, 1918.I am guessing Mottram wrote the book in 1914 because his final chapter is titled "In A.D. 2014" .It is likely that if he was predicting the future he would have picked a "round" number like100 years to look ahead.CheersWalter
