Hi....
This is on lesson plans. One candidate actually presented over 50 pages of lesson plans.......this is NOT what is expected, at all.

Bob...
Very good question.
The main idea is to have the candidate demonstrate the ability to come up with real workable lesson plans which make good sense for teaching fly casting.
CBOG'S will vary as to what they expect. Some may go through the exam and never ask for lesson plans....others may want detailed plans, neatly typed out.
A true Master ought to be able to come up with a good workable lesson plan on the spot, when asked. For example, he/she might be asked to jot down a brief lesson plan for teaching a brand new caster to be able to handle the bare essentials of fly fishing given 10 minutes of instruction. Or you might be asked to come up with a one hour instruction plan for 2 anglers.
(I witnessed one candidate do poorly on this question when he did almost nothing but demonstrate to the student with the student hardly handling the rod at all.......very poor teaching technique!)
Assuming you have thought out these various scenarios and can do this, I'd suggest that you have a couple of lesson plans that you actually use in your teachings. These should be legible. You should have good reasons for your choice of instruction methods and the order in which you have chosen to present them to the students. As an example, I know of some world class instructors who start by teaching the roll cast.......and other equally expert ones who don't think this should be taught until the student learns the basic casts including false casting. Each of these instructors has a logical REASON for his/her choice.
If you choose to present a really detailed course in fly casting to a group of students, you might consider several factors in your outline such as:
1.) Number of students.
2.) Age range.
3.) Level of casting (New casters, Intermediates, Advanced, or mixed ?)
4.) Instructor/student ratio.
5.) A statement as to goals, objectives and expected achievement.
6.) A practical time allotment schedule. (Minutes spent for each topic, break times, "alone time" for practice, snacks/lunch, etc.) This outline must fit the total time alloted for the course. It might begin with, "Introduction" and go on with times for each event......perhaps end with something like, "Questions" and/or, "Closing statements."
7.) Venue. ( Classroom, Casting pond, Lawn, River bank, etc.) Might even include proximity to rest rooms....
8.) Teaching aids, equipment, etc. (Might include things like targets, a yarn rod....all the way to video equipement and/or classroom power-point projector.)
9.) Casting outfits to be provided by the instructor.....
10.) Casting outfits provided by each student.
11.) Other items you will recommend students to bring. (Might include safety eye wear, sun screen, bug repellant, recomended clothing/footwear, etc.)
12.) Your handouts (if any).
13.) Pre-class information from students.....such as participants who have special needs, ilnesses, or risks. Some instructors have a detailed form which they have their students fill in before the course begins.
14.) Some instructors even have liability disclaimers and statements of charges. For your exam, I don't think these forms will add anything of value.
Years ago, Floyd Franke was kind enough to give me some "homework" assignments to help me prepare for the exam. One of these was to come up with a detailed lesson plan for a 2 day course for 21 senior citizens to learn fly casting. THAT required a lot of thought. In working out this and other lesson plans, I learned a great deal......you will, too.......and that goes a LOT further than the passing of an exam !

HI Gordy,
Although I will be waiting for a few months to take the test, there is something I would like to ask which we haven't discussed at any length via the group.
Regarding "Lesson Plans", just exactly what is expected (how detailed) and should they be committed to memory, typed out, or both? I have no problem coming up with plans as I have been teaching for years, but I would like to know exactly what they are looking for in lesson plans.
Thank you,
Bob Rumpf
