Another teaching tactic I often use is to have the caster stand next to a detached garage - roof about 12ft from surface - and have their back cast go over the garage. I find it a very quick approach to improving a solid caster who primarily needs better back cast loop trajectory and shape. Can be done pure vertical or off-vertical with good results.
Better when they use their own line and rod as the smack and grind of the rod and line adds extra incentive :-}o

Yes ! Sometimes all the talk and demo we do fails to result in the new caster getting the back cast loop where it should be. Usually, it is directed back and down. Even when we teach them to do it properly, the recidivism rate is high.
Reminds me of the time Bob Andreae and I had a class of new casters. These were all members of the, LADIES-LET'S-GO-FISHING, NO YELLING, SCHOOL OF FISHING. A very worthwhile organization made up of energetic ladies who loved fishing..... some of them having tired of putting up with their husband's inept instruction.
It was sponsored by the IGFA, in Florida.
We were assigned the little pond next to the main building. This pond had a high berm with bushes all around it. In order to make a back cast, you had to aim it high enough so that the line/leader wouldn't get tangled in the elevated brush behind.
It didn't take too long after several of the ladies had to climb up repeatedly and get untangled for them to almost "automatically" learn a high backcast trajectory.
Few words were needed !

Thanks for adding me to your study group.
I suggested a year or so ago that during an initial back cast, the fly leg is elevated to the horizontal by drag induced lift acting on the downward sloping line between the rod tip and the surface. This helps me understand and visualize how the line could transition from its downward slope in front of the caster to a horizontal fly leg parallel with a horizontal rod leg in a good initial back cast.
The requirements for this lift to occur do not alter the requirements for a good initial back cast. The key is to defer all significant acceleration until a horizontal back casting stroke begins. The drag induced lift occurs with the significant line velocity during and perhaps somewhat after the casting stroke. I find it desirable to move the initial back cast slightly off vertical to minimize the chance of the elevating line colliding with the rod.
In discussing this with others, I have been surprised with a wide range of agreement and disagreement. I would appreciate the views of you and your group.

The question of whether or not true aerodynamic lift occurs when casting a fly line is, indeed, a controversial one.
When we discussed this at length in the past, Phil Gay, who has studied airfoil lift as a career senior Navy jet pilot and several others including those with impressive physics backgrounds, opined that there is not enough hard evidence to substantiate the existence of true aerodynamic "lift" for a fly line loop.
Anyone who is foolish enough (As I) to have made casts during a thunderstorm may have witnessed the apparent "climbing hover" of a fly line. This is a phenomenon likely due to static electricity.
Once in a great while, I've observed what I think is an updraft of wind which elevates my line.
