Thanks Gordy I enjoyed Jeff's take on the extreme casting methods for distance!  Great thread.

    >From Bernd Zeische:

    Hi Gordy,
on distance casting I would like to see good tension in the fly-leg and a tight loop front ("pointy loops"). The fly-leg should be as straight as possible (which never can be exactly straight of course!). I also would want the candidate to know about matching trajectory to a) casting distance and b) the conditions (tail wind, front wind and so on). Also I would want to see consistent loops back and forth and a good haul adjustment. The whole cast should look smooth and relaxed. Fc & bc should be as good along a straight line as possible.
I personally would be happy if the candidate could tell me something about rotation and when to start it best during the stroke.
To define the maximum loop size we first of all would have to define how to measure loop size. To me the most important key here is the loop front. Some of us may use the 170 style and produce more distance between the legs for part time of the unrolling loop that is. However we all have tight loop fronts.
Definitely I would ask those candidates who may show the 170 style here if they can teach another style (using a smaller arc), too.
And I am pretty sure must could do that!

About hero casts - I have no idea what exactly that is. If it is about using significant higher force application than one would need while having a good casting technique, I agree. It always should look smooth. "Cast smooth and make the student see what you are doing."
If a hero cast is about style I disagree. The requirements of the test (as I know them) don't ask for any specific style nor do they to have two styles available. To me it's a plus if one can teach more than one style and I appreciate that. But if one can't I will not fail him/her, too.
    Best
    Bernd

p.s.: None of all the test requirements should be an issue. I want to see them done smoothly and with good control. The distance cast is just one of them.

    [GH]  Bernd,

    Well stated.

Your sentence, "Cast smooth and make the student see what you are doing.", says a lot !!!

MCI candidates would do well to think of this with each and every task they approach.

Your description of a "Hero cast" is the same as mine.

    Gordy
