    Walter & Group...

From Pete Greenan on tasks requested outside the stated required ones:

    Mike & All,
There is no requirement to repeat the distance cast after successfully completing it.  No task will be considered failed if it is outside the required task.  Any violation of that should be reported to a Governor or the Chair of the CBOG immediately.

    From Jeff Wagner:

Gordy, the only other time I might ask a candidate to perform that task in another direction is after telling them they have already passed the task but to inquire further about their abilities.  Often asking the candidate to change direction at the distance may give insight (show weakness or strength) into their casting and allow me to coach the candidate post-test (if appropriate and desired).  In other words some candidates may like to cast cross wind and I may ask to see them cast with the back cast into the wind. If they are casting with backcast into the wind I may ask that they cast with the front cast into the wind.  As we know distance casting eccentuates smaller errors that are not evident at shorter distances.  This is a great opportunity to learn more about a candidates cast and possibly help them improve.

From Mack Martin, in response to our prior message on trying to relax a candidate who appears to be heavily stressed during an exam:

    Gordy:

I think that is very good advice. Keeping students calm is sometimes a key to their success.

    Les Rosenthal sends this message:

It might be an interesting topic to hear techniques we who have examined CI or MCI candidates have done to relax candidates and experiences CIs or MCIs have experienced that helped relax them?

One simple technique I use and used when appropriate and often, to smile.  I council my candidates to relax and have fun during the exam.  It should be fun.  I let my attitude control the circumstances rather than the other way around.

    Les,

    Great suggestion.

For a well prepared candidate, the exam, while still a challenge, is often a fun experience.

Some examiners are really good at relaxing their candidates.  The late Tom White was at the top of the list in that department !!

I consider it my duty to try to bring out the BEST a candidate has to offer during an exam.
