Walter & Group...
>From John Till:
I apologize to the group for not being more diligent in making other comments. I agree totally with Guy Manning in connection with the use of the terms translation and rotation--I cannot remember the last time that I ran into a CCI who do not know the distinction between those two terms. If a person is going to be a MCI, he or she certainly must know the concept of those terms and how can you possibly teach someone unless you have some definition or label. Sexy loops goes into more detail than I can understand about the concept and there've been many articles written about those definitions including both of the Borgers. Best to all of you,
John

[GH] John,
I haven't found references to the Borger's writings on translation/rotation. In going through Jason Borger's book, however, I did note his depictions made of frame by frame sequences of his forward casts which demonstrate the relationships between casting arc and rod bend. *
In line with what Mark Surtees pointed out, these also show a great deal of hand descent which is needed in order for the rod tip to take a relatively straight path.
Note the attachment.
* Jason Borger's NATURE OF FLY CASTING a modular approach, by Jason Borger, 2001, p.36, Figures 2-22a. & 2-22b.

>From Mark Surtees:
Hi Gordy
I’m much tickled by the idea that I might be an “SL minion”, which is just a type of small onion presumably….
My point with respect to ten year olds was made in response to the suggestion that we were somehow at degree level understanding here, we’re not, I have a ten year old and he can explain it probably better than me…. Sometimes it’s tough to get your point over on an e-mail without appearing belligerent, I didn’t intend to patronize anyone so if I did, sorry ‘bout that.
I hope to make it over to the FFF Fair next year and if I actually get there I’m happy to do a workshop on the use of fresh produce and common household items in casting instruction...its best programmed for a lunchtime… J

[GH] Mark,
If you host that veggie workshop I'll not be able to resist signing up to be one of your participants.

From Bob Stouffer:
Dr. Gordy
It was not I who taught with vegetables. Could not because of the striking visual similarities between Rutabaga and Fennel when sliced and sauteed.
Thank you for the note regarding the SL'rs. Hoped it was not Straight Liners.

[GH] Bob,
My error ! I realized it after sending the message off.
"I was waiting for someone to ask Bob Stouffer just how he goes about teaching fly casting with a basket of veggies. Love to learn how to do that !"
- Should have been addressed to Mark Surtees.
Must admit, when I first saw Guy's message, I did think of "Straight Liners"! Then I remembered that Guy has had more casting and teaching experience than most any Master I could think of, so that didn't fit at all.
