[GH] If anyone has been teaching fly casting longer than I have, it's Lefty Kreh. He makes each lesson, FUN. His use of simple terms and direct teaching, combined with his ability to call on his students by name has gone a long way toward commanding their undivided attention as they listen to him.
Over the years, I've learned a great deal from him about fly casting, fly fishing, and the effective presentation to both public and students.
I recall fishing from a flats skiff with Lefty in the Bahamas and coming back with my ribs aching from laughing at his funny quips and jokes ..... and suddenly realizing that I'd learned several new fly fishing tricks along the way. I've never spent time with him without learning something new.
Below, we'll share one of his little teaching tips.

From Lefty:
Gordy—-
On the board the subject of knowing the student's name came up. I think it's important to remember and use frequently the student's name. There are two tricks that help me remember quickly each name of at least a dozen students—more than that I have problem.
When introduced I never hear the last name (when spelled out it might look like an eye chart and I wipe it from my mind) and if I do I can't can recall any name thereafter. Later if needed you can always use their first name to say you've forgotten their last.
The other important point is as soon as the person says their first name I repeat that name while welcoming them to the class.
If there are ten students—I could never remember 20 names—some difficult. But it's fairly easy to remember ten usually common names like Bob, Gale, Jim or Joan. Maybe that works for some instructors. It sure helped me through the years.

[GH] Lefty,
Thanks. I wondered how you did that.
