Walter Simbirski & Group.....
[GH] From Jim Valle in response to Dan Davala's message on Task 5 :
Gordy and Group,
One of my favorite questions when conducting CI, THCI or MCI exams is “Why do you think this task is on the test?”…. it really tells me if the candidate understands the fundamental Casting and Teaching principles involved… fundamentals that the new instructor will need and use in lots of situations …
Also, Dan is being extremely kind I don’t know if it was all that dramatic… in my mind anyway… but it points out again what I have said many times before … recognize how much the FFF credentials have taught you … you know a lot more than you think.. so be confident in your Certifications at every level…
and… be very careful of what you say … Students are Really Listening!
… and Dan the check is in the mail! J
Hope this helps,
Jim V
PS on a Serious note … get a Mentor if you don’t have one…. I could not have done this without my Mentor , Thanks Again Gordy!

[GH] From Troy Miller on Dan Davila's point on teaching the curve casts:
Gordy,
If I’m reading the last paragraph correctly, I think that Dan is saying he is willing to teach curve casting by combining multiple techniques (pullbacks/mends, etc).
Regards,
Troy Miller
"In summary, I wouldn't teach a student to make the overpowered curve cast for practical fishing purposes in one single, rigid, pure way (absent pull-backs, mends, etc.) any more than I would teach someone to fish all day with 30' of line outside the rod tip using the rod hand only with the line pinched to the cork. I don't believe that is what this task is about."

[GH] Dusty Sprague comments:
Dan is right on target with his comments below.

[GH] In our discussions of "pull back" augmenting counterflex and rebound, we may have been "putting the cart before the horse" as we try to interpret what this action does !
Aitor Coteron presents us with this great video of Bernd Ziesche performing an Overpowered Curve with a pull-back. These videos often challenge our preconceived notions of elements of casting mechanics.

Hi Gordy,
Just in case it could be of interest for the curve discussion:
Regards,
Aitor

[GH] The line wave produced seems to flow from the distal end (tip) of the line back toward the rod !!!
I couldn't see any immediate effect on counterflex or rebound... (??????)
All after I ran this video at least a dozen times.
Tells me that perhaps I don't know as much about what is really happening as I thought I did !
Note the comments which appear below the video.
The video being shot from above (probably from a bridge) is ideal for showing not only this cast, but the line layout as well.
Great teaching demo !!!!
It would be great to have someone make a comparative video of the overpowered curve cast done with no pull-back, haul or other accentuating moves.

[GH] From Mike Heritage :
Hi Gordy,
I have no problems with Mac's take on the use of pullback in relation to the MCI assessment.....but..... pullback is just a modified stop, in my version anyway, which has the effect of accelerating the loop to accentuate the kick around. Of course this is all related to the candidates wanting to show a very positive curve. The best way is to use a leader that will kick. A friend gave me a bonefish leader ten minutes before I took my assessment. I could do with more friends like that.

[GH] Mike,
Well.... perhaps a stop sequence modified by a mend move. All depends upon what we wish to call it.
Interesting. Any heavy aggressively tapered leader will have sufficient mass to behave a bit like a weighted fly as it tends to kick over well.
A salt water leader with a heavy shock tippet will do the same thing even if the fly is small and light.
Bonefish leaders will vary a great deal.... even the factory made packaged ones. I make up my own according to the fishing conditions.
