    I am glad to see that other think as I do, that the cast, which includes the creation of the loop, starts from the ground up.
     
    I hope this will increase the importance of the Stance to everyone, and it's affect on our body movements when setting up to make a cast.

    Gordy & Ed,
    The more I think through this the more I realize how much I don’t know.  I cannot distinguish between cause and effect.  I think I understand the concept of stored energy and the transfer of energy in the strings below.  I believe that Ed is correct in the deeper the rod bend the easier it is to transfer that energy into the fly line (i.e. cast easier).  But to me (in my limited mind) the loop is in the fly line; and, as the fly line overtakes the rod, the loop forms.  The loop’s energy forms from the rod load, the caster’s movement and most likely other factors beyond my current imagination.
    So, help the uninitiated here if you care to please???

    I see it as an almost philosophical  subject .... how we look at the World of "cause and effect".

    The way Ckling puts it as he simply embraces both concepts appeals to me.

    Hi Gordy 

    In Tai Chi, there is this concept of Yi(intention), Chi( life energy), Li(force/strength). Now any martial move starts with Yi, giving rise to Chi and then Li.

    So in casting ,Yi intention to form a loop, Chi to energize the appropriate body parts to move the rod and Li to create a force on the line to form a loop. So we can say the loop forms at Yi or in the mind. 
    Too esoteric, I am with Mike that loop forms at rod tip with rod casting.

    I think this has gone beyond the esoteric. Inventing a theoretical definition does not create a new truth.
     
    A loop is the form of energy we see in a fly line. Bend is the form of energy we see in a loaded rod. Ed describes a nascent energy source, but that could become a golf swing, a dart toss, a whip crack, a knife throw, a stand-up double, a sword thrust, an axe blow, or anything else we apply it to. It is NOT only a nascent loop. The energy potential of the human generator may also  be mis-applied and result in no loop at all. Likewise,  A sperm and an egg are NOT an embryo until some fortuitous sequence of occurrences allow their intended combination and subsequent cell division.
     
    >From a human mechanics standpoint, all changes in inertia/momentum (kinetics) require a stabilization OR initiation from the body's center-of-gravity (CoG). In a standing, intact adult human, this point is normally 2-cm anterior to the second sacral spinal segment (in the pelvis). The legs & feet become a conduit to transfer the equal and opposite force of this energy/force to the ground/earth, in Newtonian parlance.
     
    When the adult human sits, becomes morbidly obese, develops a limb deficiency (amputation), etc. the center-of-gravity changes accordingly. A caster moving his elbow far laterally and above the shoulder impairs the effectiveness of their center-of-gravity in mounting a core response to inertia and the moment acting on their body. This incidental circumstance greatly enhances the load on the limb so placed. Overloading the limb in such manner enhances incidence of injury.
     
    Forces acting closer to the CoG generally represent lower risk of injury - forces acting on a more massive body part generally result in less potential for injury.
