I am setting the stage for a detailed discussion of the TASKS listed on the Master Fly Casting Instructor Performance Test. (Revision Effective 01/01/09).
When we do this, I'll enlist help from some of our BOG's.
As most of you know, the Master exam has been extensively reviewed and again revised by the FFF BOG Master Testing Committee.
Dusty Sprague is on that committee and served as former chairman. He, and other members of that committee have pointed out that the intent of the new revision is primarily to make the task descriptions as easy as possible to understand. This is felt to be more important than ever in view of the fact that many exams are held in non English speaking countries where translations must be clear and understandable. Committee member, Dan McCrimmon has been especially helpful with his experience as Chairman of the BOG International committee.
The committee has also worked for many months on clarifying and stating the EXPECTATIONS of the explanations and demonstrations, the clear REASONS FOR FAILURE, and the probable inclusion of a revised grading system.
This committee has worked diligently to refine the expectations. In doing this, the members have carefully reviewed the actual casting accomplishments of its own members and other Masters to assure that examiners will not require performance beyond that level.
I've been assured that the intent of revision was NOT to try to make the exam more difficult. If anything, greater clarity and the introduction of detailed expectations as well as the suggested grading system may well make this examination easier without sacrificing high standards in any way.
It is my understanding that the newly revised exam must go through further review by the BOG Chairman and possibly the Executive Committee, then put to discussion and vote by the BOG. Once so ratified, it will be introduced on the FFF Website and available for our membership. This will be followed by a period of time so that candidates who are preparing will have plenty of time to read and "digest" the alterations before making it effective.
I'm told that the committee has considered eventually coming up with a video rendition of the expected performance of the various exam tasks.
All this will take time. For this reason, we'll be limiting our discussions to the exam presently in use.
Let's begin with the present test as written. Then we'll go on to discussion of each specific task.
At this point, all interested should read the first page of the MASTER FLY CASTING INSTRUCTOR PERFORMANCE TEST available on the FFF Website.
For MCI candidates : If you have not already done so, at this point I strongly suggest you access this and print it out.
