    Walter & Group...

Task 11.  Starting the series with fly in hand, present the fly accurately to targets at 40, 30, and 55 feet, in that order, false casting between targets.  To score, the fly must hit 30-inch targets at 40 feet and 30 feet and a 48-inch target at 55 feet.  Allowances will be made for adverse conditions.  The candidate is allowed three successive lay-downs at each ring to score in a single sequence through all three targets.  Hauling permitted.  Repeat over opposite shoulder.

Expectations:  good line control and accuracy with consistent loops on both front and back.  No tailing loops.  All casting will be aerialized, and hitting the ground counts as a lay-down.  The candidate may not drag the line on the ground in an attempt to measure the cast.

    Passed  (___).

    Failed    (___).

    (___)  Poor line control.

    (___)  Inconsistent, unequal loops.

    (___)  Tailing loops.

    (___)  Missed targets :  (___) 40 feet;  (___) 30feet;  (___) 55 feet.

    [GH]

Things to consider as we try to interpret the task and preamble notes:

    1.  Although not stated on the task description, fly lines marked in any way which would assist in distance judgement are not allowed.

         a.  A single mark designating the rear of the fly line head is OK.

         b.  Markings at the end of the fly line near the leader connection designating the line rating have been allowed.

         c.  Markings other than these will not be allowed.

         d.  "Markings" made by forming bumps or knots on the line which can be felt while false casting will also not be allowed.

    2. In the past, a few candidates have used techniques such as the "Mulson Wind Cast" where a strong side wind is negated by having the fly line strike the water or ground and then unroll just above the water or ground to the target are not allowed.  (Can be deadly accurate for fishing.... but won't fly, here !)

    3. Strong winds and other inclement weather and poor visibility conditions will be considered as "adverse conditions".

    4.  Lately, many examiners have been using plastic field cones as targets instead of rings.  For the 30 foot and 40 foot targets, the fly must land within 15 inches of the center of such cone or similar targets.  For the 55 foot target, the fly must land within 24 inches of the center.

    5.  If the fly or line strikes the ground or water, it IS considered a lay-down.

    6.  If the fly or line strikes the ground on a back cast, I would consider that unacceptable on the basis of poor line control.

    7.  Questions may arise (as they have during tests) as to what is meant by the term "inconsistent" or "unequal" loops.  (It is rare, even when experts cast to have identical loops on the back casts and forward casts.)

    8.  We'll also cover issues which will arise as the candidate is asked to teach this task.

    9.  We've had questions as to whether a so-called "vertical rod plane teaching style" of casting is expected.
While I have not been requiring this, I know we'd appreciate a comment from the MCI Testing Committee.
(Hard to believe, but I had one candidate ask if he could use a side arm cast because of thunder and lightning danger in the area !)

    10.  I know from experience, that there will be several interpretations of exactly how this task will be scored.
We must consider that there are 3 attempts allowed ("three successive lay-downs at each ring").  That means 3 tries at 3 targets over one shoulder; then 3 tries at 3 targets over the other shoulder.  A total of 18 opportunities to score (or not).

Rather than giving you my opinion on the last two, I'll ask for an interpretation from one of the members of the MCI Testing Committee.

Let's have your questions, comments and concerns.
