Walter & Group...
[GH] From David Diaz. The * is my addition :
G: Mr. Stouffer's answer was first-class. If I were either the lead examiner or one of the other team members for his MCI task examine, I would mark his discussion with a P+ grade.*
His pattern of stating the most important detail first and then discussing its significance or a variation or a complementary detail is one worth emulating by aspiring candidates. By doing that he convinces the examiner that he's in possession of the right stuff, that he knows exactly what the right answer is. If the casting demo met the specification, I'd call his a model response. Notice also what is absent from the answer: buzz words, tech talk, dropping casting celebs' names, acronyms. If he provided the explanation to a fisherman who had paid for a class on "Beating the Wind," then that customer would feel that his money was well spent.
And your organizational framework provided the just right skeleton for the muscle and sinew he contributed. Nice job.
David Diaz
* P+ = Passed exceptionally well (according to the newly proposed grading system).

[GH] My comment, "Well done, Bob" following his contribution was understatement. His responses were sterling !

[GH] From Peter Morse on leaders for casting in high winds :
Gordy I haven't seen any discussion on modifying leaders to deal with inclement conditions. When teaching a class on casting in the wind and dealing with the wind this is the first thing I discuss, its one of things we can adjust to give us more control BEFORE we even step onto the water or up onto the casting deck. Its something candidates will possibly be grilled on in the oral component but I think its always wise to start with a comment on altering leader.

[GH] Peter,
You're right. We have discussed tackle system designations, line weights and other tackle considerations for casting in high winds, but have ignored the leader !
Let's ask a few questions and then review the responses. I'll value your input :
Question -
Your student asks how to design a leader for his 8 wt. moderately fast action 9' fly rod when casting for bonefish while wading a shallow flat. The wind is strong and gusty. He says he's already changed from a WF 8 F line to a WF 8 I line, because it helped him handle the wind.
How would you advise him with respect to these leader characteristics ? :
1. Overall Length.
2. Taper design.
3. Stiffness.
4. Knots.
Gordy
