    Walter & Group...

    [GH] From Jeff Barefoot :

    Hi Gordy and friends,

I'm in the camp of the PULD should be covered in the CI exam.  This way it would not need to be later in the Master exam and we can all sleep better knowing that all of our instructors at all levels are proven.

I usually don't add the pick up to the front or the lay down/follow through to the back until the student has demonstrated that he/she is comfortable forming and controlling loops. Once it's apparent that the student has control of the loops, it's only then that I add the pickup. Once the pickup is assimilated then I'll add the lay down.

What's interesting is that I have found that on even a students first casting lesson usually they can be introduced to reach mends w/o any risks. How I do it is as soon as they have proven that they are comfortable w/the PULD I  have them execute the lay down in the direction that will suit the presentation. An example would be say the current is coming left to right. Simple, make the lay down to the left. I have had lessons that I sensed that this would be inappropriate, but they were rarer than most would have guessed.

Again, I don't teach the reach mend as a separate concept or even introduce the term. I simply ask the the student to consider that they will be putting the rod tip somewhere after the stop, and they should do so with purpose.

    [GH] From Walter Simbirski :

    Hi Gordy,

I think Paul Arden's idea of teaching the PULD would make a good task but my first inclination was to make it a CI task
or an MCI task only. We already have a number of tasks that are similar between the two tests but the potential master is
expected to do them better or farther than the potential CI. To me this misses one of the reasons a person becomes a
master and that is to show that they are ready to mentor those wishing to become CIs or masters. So, I think teaching
the task of teaching the PULD at the CI level should target a beginner audience, i.e. teaching a beginner the PULD, and
task of teaching the PULD at the master level should target an audience of those wanting to be instructors who, in turn,
will teach the PULD to beginners. This could include ensuring that the potential master is communicating the principles
of the PULD at a level a potential CI should understand, using terminology that we expect instructors to use when
communicating with each other but at the same time explaining to the CI how to communicate the principles without
jargon to a potential beginner. Does the potential master also have a firm grasp of faults that occur when
beginners are learning the PULD and ways to fix those faults? A potential master should also have experience
at teaching and should be able to provide real life examples with regards to teaching the PULD and what sort of
approaches worked well or did not work well for them. Does the potential master also have experience with teaching
different age groups or other demographics for example?

This also brings up the idea that a potential master should be able to identify casting faults and ways to correct them.

One of the things I've always felt was missing from the CI test was a demonstration of basic skills such as tying
knots. Also I think there should be more demonstrated knowledge of some of the differences between fresh and salt
    water fishing.

Last but not least should be some demonstration of safe practices such as how to avoid injuries when learning how to cast.
We should not be trying to diagnose or act as medical specialists (unless we happen to actually be medial specialists)
but we should be concerned about avoiding muscle fatigue as an example.

    Cheers

    Walter
