[GH] Paul Borque's take on, "HANG TIME" :
I disagree with the idea that their is no such thing as hang time. If we called it "fall time" then maybe we could agree that it is exists? Semantics aside you have to acknowledge that a period of time exists from the point your back cast straightens to the point you begin your forward cast. Obviously that period of time will be determined by your trajectory. Whether you are intentionally trying to keep the 180 plane by letting it fall some as a readjustment for your forward cast or unintentional. Hang time has very little bearing on casting compared to other stuff.
I sometimes feel we are being held back as casters when we are talking in 2d with a too and fro casts. I think the dynamics of fishing out of 8s, circles, spirals, and any other continuous motion casts open up a lot more opportunity to the fisherman. But that discussion if probably for another day.
This has been really great discussion so far Gordy. Keep it coming!

[GH] Paul,
While the time interval obviously exists, what the fly casting literature eventually labels it remains to be seen. I see the term, "HANG TIME" as one oft used description for our lexicon.
There is no denying the value of the family of elliptical casts in all its current forms including Spey casting. So-called, "STRAIGHT LINE OVER HEAD CASTING" is just one form of fly casting which happens to appeal to the majority of fly fishers in the U.S.A. Each has its place when fishing.
The distinctions blur a bit as we use curve and hook casts, the various roll casts and "Belgian casts", "corkscrew casts", "bow & arrow casts" and "cast-mends".
When fishing, the expert fly caster may use any one of these techniques or combinations during a single excursion.
