  • THANKSGIVING - Caster

[GH]  Here in the U.S.A., we are celebrating Thanksgiving.today..... a tradition which began with some the first settlers to arrive here from Europe.

My family and I will also be celebrating the fact that i am now 80 years young.

Many of you will be joining family and friends on this holiday.

Let me wish all of you a happy and wonderful time !

    [GH]  Jim Gill Writes :

Too much slack under the rod tip prior to lift of; insufficient acceleration and collapse of the loop on the back-cast - is he releasing line on the back-cast?

    Jim.

    From Jim Valle :

    Gordy & Group,

Flaw:    Student is pushing the stroke with the thumb.
Correction:      a) explain and demonstrate pulling the stroke with the heel of his hand
                or
                            b) Try a different grip

    [GH] From Doug Swift :

    Hi Gordy-Dennis
Sounds like Dennis had some success getting most of the major flaws under control with this student.  It appears to me that he has a tracking problem.  It looks like there is a unintended wrist rotation near the end of  his casting stroke that may still be an issue after Dennis' instruction.  Some thoughts on straightening that out may be -- practicing making the stroke with a rod butt section along a vertical flat wall to keep the hand/wrist arm tracking straight (Steve Rajeff?)--Monitoring the thumb position the end of the stroke (Lefty)--Use of the "plane-O-Matic" (Jason Borger's Nature of Fly Casting P.73).
    Doug.

[GH]  Credit goes to Doug Swisher and Carl Richards for coming up with the "Plane-O-Matic" teaching aid. They didn't actually name it. Jason Borger credits them for it.

It is a clever and utterly simple tool which is helpful in teaching good tracking :

"Another aid that teaches the feel of proper thumb position is to cast with a large, flat sheet of material such as he side of a cardboard box or a piece of sheet plastic.  Either cut out a grip at the bottom or attach a wooden dowel.  Such a large, flat, lightweight sheet has to travel straight as it slices through the air, ensuring that your thumb will stay in the proper position." *

    From Jim Valle :

    Gordy and Group,

    Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Thanks to Dennis Grant. What a great exercise.

I certainly found some new perspectives.  I find it really impressive to see how much Passion and Professionalism we as instructors invest in our casting instruction. There is no doubt that the FFF CI program attracts the very best in the industry. Thanks to each and every one of you in the group… You are the Success of the program.

From the perspective of Continuing Certification you convince me that our instructors are driven to learn more and will continue to pursue the “Perfect Cast and Lesson”. Isn’t it amazing how just in this one exercise, through sharing ideas and thoughts, how we all start working at a higher level? I would ask each of you to share this professionalism with every instructor you know or meet… it will elevate the entire program and make all our credentials all that more valuable.

And, Thanks to Gordy, who guides us all to this level.

    All the Best,
    Jim V
