    Walter & Group....

    Both Mark and Gordy are zeroing in on the next step of this exercise. It's impossible to get ahead of Gordy !

    Let us not get confused (and I don$*HN&~ think you are) between: 1. how we learn and 2. the way we cast

    In short we learn by, seeing, hearing, feeling,  understanding; reading, analysis, logic, etc.).

    But we cast by feeling !  No matter HOW they learn to cast, the everyday fisher person/student, wants to feel the rod work properly. Think about the times you have gone to a FF shop and picked up a rod, they all LOOK good but you flex it to see how it feels. Students in our classes exchange rods and EVERY DAY you will hear, I like the feel of this one. Or how often have you heard while teaching "wow that cast felt good". One of our advanced class exercises is to cast with the eyes closed. If you have not tried it , do it !

    Before you get too rowdy ! Absolutely a student LOOKS for results; a straight line in the water, a nice loop and fly presentation but it$*HN&{ the FEEL of a good cast that gets them all excited. We can lay the back cast line on the ground 60 feet behind us and make a forward cast LOOK good, it may be a good tool for teaching but its not a great way to fish all the time.

    We learn to MOVE a fly rod through a prescribed set of moves depending on our style but we CAST the line ! Line provides load, load provides feel.

    Regardless if you reply, or not,  if you are planning to attempt the MCI test, make a list of examples that you would use for each learning method;

    1. visual  (seeing)   Demo, video

    2. Auditory (hearing)  Point the rod to the sky

    3. Kinesthesia (feeling)  Hand over hand

     4. Cognition (understanding; reading, analysis, logic, etc.). Handouts

    So Gordy doesn't get swamped with replies just send in your favorites, innovative, or 'off the wall' that seem to work for you .

    Now the ultimate questions.  Can we determine (in a 2 hour lesson) how our student will learn ?
