         That is interesting. I had often wondered how much extra line outside the rod tip added a line weight.
    Rule of thumb is that for about each 5'-6' of line beyond the first 30' that you are adding one additional line rating.  So if you carry 45' of line as you false cast..... you are already casting a 6 wt. line !  Carrying 50' has you casting a 7 wt. line.
     
    So can one deduce that the reverse is true, that for every 5-6' less than the first 30' outside the rod tip you go down a line wt?

    Yes, indeed.  It is an approximation.

    Works until you get way out beyond the head.  Once into the rear taper and especially the running line, the ratio changes.  The line gets much thinner, so at that point and beyond, it takes a lot more line length to change one designation.
