Lewis Hinks asks an interesting question :
Hi Gordy,
I have a question that I have not been able to find a suitable answer, or at least one that I am confident with; that is dual (or even triple) line rating for rods and lines.
I have seen rods for sale rated for 5/6 wt lines (for example) and am not clear what the manufacturer intends. Many years ago I remember rods being rated for different wt lines depending on if you were using a DT or a WF, but I cannot believe that is the case today, given what we know about standards in line making (AFTMA)
As well, I have seen lines for sale dual rated, again 5/6 (for example). I have asked other CIs, MCIs, equipment retailers, and others and cannot get a good answer, or in fact even a consistent answer.
My feeling is that the rod manufacturer is showing that the rod will work with either a 5 or a 6 (so a 5.5 line would be ideal), but we, as casters and fishers, routinely over and under (line) weight rods, depending on what we are trying to accomplish.
I am not at all sure about the dual ratings on the lines. Maybe the same rational as for the rods??
Lewis
