Gordy,
I love the value of the short answer, allows the student to practice more and thus teach themselves.
Finish a two hour teaching session today with a Delta Captain and his 18 year old son, the son 's first time to fly fishing and casting.
I ask them how they best learned and received two short answers--The Father--by watching, and The Son--by doing-- so I simply started with the son doing and the father by watching!
This started a nice learning flow, with plenty of practice time, both are ready to start river fishing--cast to 30 to 40 feet. Roll cast, tension cast, and pick up and lay down cast using the water to load the rod. Also, fishing aspects, setting the hook playing the fish in minimum time (thank you Gary Borger!) and catch and release.
Had the advantage of grass and a flowing creek for teaching!
We will spend the day on the Hamm's Fork River in Wyoming at 7,100 feet. This was a excellent first start with a lot of "listening and asking questions on my part, to assess the learning curve." Plenty of water and breaks in the shade (98 degrees) and quitting before fatigue.
I share with them my goals-- the first, for them to have great fishing day learning together and second, I would always be available if they wish to go deeper into casting and fly fishing.
Thought of you Sir Gordy, Your Father, and Grand Father fly fishing, creating, bonding, and creating memories that last forever. And that is why I love to teach, trying to bring passion to life, and for you Mr. Al Crise, a passion shared with the young!
Tight lines and blue skies,
Jerry
