I include Dr. Phil Brunquell's book in my plan for younger kids. It is parent-oriented and I have donated a few copies to overbearing parents along the years. I think it was Gene Hill who made sure his kids had a soda pop and a candy bar when they went with him to the skeet field. So, as Al Crise reinforces, there must be "FUN", too. When my students demonstrate a viable (not necessarily great) roll cast and overhead cast, I reward them with a trick cast - in the way of the snap cast to retrieve a fly for inspection from in front of them. Our friend Tom White enjoyed playing with this in his demos and injected his showman personality while aiming it at targeted spectators behind him.

 

Another reference for teaching children is "Fly Fishing with Children"  A guide for Parents.   by Phillip Brunquell, M.D.

Although not in the form of a lesson plan, he provides some great tools, techniques, tables, charts, diagrams, as well as quizzes that could be used with children.

I encourage Master candidates to read both the Phil Genova book and Brunquell book as part of their preparation. I use some of these simplifications when I guide clients even today. My local TU chapter taught the school program in a local high school for a few years but it died when our Physical Education department faculty member promoting it left their employ. I enjoyed the  program and we received a lot of interest from both the students and the faculty.

You and Al Crise are right about the value in making it FUN !

 

I like your comment about the reward system......  especially when the reward is a cool cast or trick.  I remember Tom doing just that.

Yesterday, Mark Surtees came up with a good arguement for NOT using the technique of having students switch to the use of the non-dominent hand when teaching.

 

I rarely use this option, though I did point out one rational for it as well as the observation that as with any single technique, it doesn't always work.

 

Mark did point out that it can be useful in instructor-to-instructor activities.  That caused me to reflect on the few times I did use it.  To the best of my recollection, it was usually when coaching Master candidates which would fit his paradigm.

 

Now I'd like to know if any of you in the Group have used this technique and, if so, your experience with it.

Prescription Bottles can also be a poor man's fly box!  I have several I carry in my fly vest, one for Mayflys, Caddies,

and so forth.  I get some strange looks when it comes to changing flies and state it is time to take a pill!

 Before gusseted waterproof fly boxes came on the market, salt water fly fishermen had to put up with fly hooks

which quickly rusted.  "Z-nickel" and (later) stainless steel fly hooks were never the perfect solution because of the fact

 that we never could get and maintain a perfectly sharp hook point on them .... and some brands when used for big game

actually broke at the bight when playing a big powerful fish.

 

My personal "rule" is to NEVER return a fly used in salt water to the box.  To violate this was to risk the loss of every

 fly in the box !  After using a fly in the salt, I wash it with fresh water and dry it thoroughly before returning it.

 

We found that a screw top bottle was one of the very best ways to carry our flies.   Still is.  Lots cheaper than some of

the fancy waterproof boxes sold today.

I was wondering what two books you were looking for and why? Fly Lines by Lefty and Presentation by Borger I think.
 
I stopped directing the Masters School with Lefty last year. Too many expenses, too few students! The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts don't call anymore so If the study group needs something I have (providing I can find it) they're welcome to it! Just let me know.

Two of the hard to find books some of our members seek may well be the ones you noted :

 

1.  PRESENTATION by Gary Borger.

 

2.  MODERN FLY LINES by Bruce Richards  (Part of LEFTY'S LITTLE LIBRARY series.)

 

My personal opinion is that these two are must reading for MCCI candidates.  A shame that they are out of print.

 

I happen to be looking for TROUT Vol. II of that series.  It is the only one of my otherwise complete collection

which no longer have .... victim of a loan a few years ago.
