BOTTLE & OTHER TEACHING AIDS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From Lefty Kreh on his little bottle used by
Rene Hesse as a neat teaching aid :
Gordy
The
bottle I slip on the half rod for teaching the casting stroke can stop can be
purchased for one dollar at the "travel section" of Walmart and Target where
they sell small containers of toothpaste, hand lotion, etc. Also for the student
to evaluate the casting stroke the attached string should be at least 20 feet
and a bit longer is better.
No method works
for every one but the bottle and string often has a student making good strokes
in a few minutes. I then have them pick up the rod with about 15 or so feet of
line outside the tip and tell them,"Just imagine you are throwing the bottle
straight ahead off the rod".
Lefty....
That little bottle is perfect in size, shape,
and weight for that purpose. I should have taken a picture of
it when Jim Valle and I were casting with you last
summer. G.
From Al Crise:
Howdy Gordy and
Gang
Two things come to mind
about teaching
First is from Rhea Topping
MCI when I got to help her with a Class in the Rain at Southern Council Conclave
several years back. She used foam gulf balls place on the end of the rod butt.
or a stick if you do not have enough rods. Making a good stop will send the foam
balls out but not far or will it mar any thing. In our case it was in the barn
with a leaky roof and the balls floated well.
Second is one that I have
spoke of before
Fish Fighting: Using
a 16oz. water bottle for the fish. I have them cast to me about 30 ft. Tie
on the bottle and start moving backwards. A Slip knot around the neck of
the bottle will hold it. After a little give and take I put the bottle on the
ground. It will feel much like a fish as far as just stripping in the bottle. It
is a good way to show the 90 degree from the handle of the rod is the best way
to fight the fish.Then they have to learn to stop stripping in time to lip, net,
or reach the fish without lifting it out of the water. These are soon games that
even the big kids like to try.
I have a fear of a young one
dragging the fish up the beach saying "Mr. Crise taught me to cast."
Al... You and Rhea
must have had quite a roof leak if the balls floated on the barn floor !
Good one, though.
I like your 16 Oz bottle
for a fish fighting exercise.
Surf fly fishermen often DO
drag the fish up onto the beach, especially big ones. They have learned
(sometimes the hard way) to do it in concert with the last wave wash, holding it
in position as the wash recedes. Trick is to employ the "90 degree rule"
or even with less of an angle as this is done.
That "rule" is even more
important to heed when fighting a large fish from directly beneath a
skiff. I've witnessed many a fly rod broken as the angler reared back
beyond the 90 degrees in fighting a deep sounded tuna. (One of you in our
Group will remember the day you broke 3 fly rods within 2 hours hauling tuna off
Jupiter Inlet, Florida years ago..... name withheld to protect the
not-so-innocent ! )
